Super Marina (US) earned her first stakes win June 24 at Belmont Park when the North American 3-year-old Warrior’s Reward filly won the US$100,000 Wild Applause S. by a neck over rival Bellavais.
The Wild Applause was moved from the turf to the main dirt track following heavy rains on the previous day.
After trailing in fourth in a tightly packed field for the first five furlongs, Super Marina moved up to battle with Bellavais for the lead. The stretch drive turned out to be a match race as the duo pulled away , with Super Marina getting the best of her foe.
The final time for the mile (about 1,600 metres) on a fast main track was 1:36.78.
“We just told Manny (jockey Manny Franco) to ride her like she’s on the turf: keep her all covered up, save her, and let her run,” George Weaver’s assistant trainer Blair Golden said of the victory. “She just gutted it out at the end, like she does every time she runs.”
Super Marina upped her record to 4-1-2 in 12 starts (nine of them coming on the turf) and has banked US$131,902 for R. A. Hill Stables.
She is Warrior’s Reward’s ninth black type winner and pushed his lifetime progeny earnings past the $9.7 million mark. His first three North American crops all performed well enough to rank the Spendthrift stallion in the top 10 of his generation each year thus far. He will be standing at Spendthrift Australia this year for $9,900 (inc. GST).
