“I was lucky enough to work with Medaglia d’Oro at Darley and the similarities between him and Warrior’s Reward are remarkable. With the champion Medaglia d’Oro no longer shuttling to Australia, Warrior’s Reward, as his only Group 1 winning son standing in Victoria, is primed to ensure his legacy continues.” — Steve Toole, Spendthrift Australia stallion manager

Breeding Analysis for Warrior’s Reward by Kristen Manning

Already the sire of 30 black type performers (14 stakes winners/16 stakes placed) in the northern hemisphere, Warrior’s Reward has shown that he has what it takes to upgrade – no surprise considering the strength of his breeding.

The influence of the acclaimed matriarch Frizette is a major highlight of Warrior’s Reward’s pedigree… strains of her descendants Djeddah, Bailjumper, Jet Pilot, Seattle Dancer and Mr Prospector.

It is notable that he fares extremely well with extra strains of this family. He relishes further Mr Prospector (ten of his stakes winners have more as do eight of his stakes placegetters) and has also picked up very well with strains of Seattle Slew whose half-brother Seattle Dancer is Warrior’s Reward’s second dam sire – the excellent mare My Charmer duplicated.

Warrior’s Reward has sired two stakes winners and five stakes placegetters out of mares carrying a Seattle Slew strain and there is plenty of that blood in this part of the world. Also desirable are strains of fellow Frizette descendants Roan Rocket, Seattle Dancer, Elusive Quality, Darshaan, Jugah, Baldric, Bismark II, Sing Sing, Mukaddamah, Gold And Ivory, Prince True Tourbillon, Shecky Greene and Lomond.

The latter is easily found as dam sire of Exceed And Excel – son of the great Danehill whose descendants look a nice fit for Warrior’s Reward who boasts a rare strain (his third dam sire) of Graustark who combines extremely well with his full brother His Majesty – Danehill’s dam sire.

As a bonus Exceed And Excel has as his fourth dam sire Beau Gar whose Gr.1 winning dam Bellesoeur is Warrior’s Reward’s fifth dam. She can also be found in any mares with Deputy Minister such as daughters of Distorted Humor and Dehere.

Those by the latter are of special interest as he is out of a mare by the legendary Secretariat who loves combining with his half-brother Sir Gaylord, grandsire of the dam of Warrior’s Reward’s grandsire El Prado. Three of Warrior’s Reward’s stakes winners and five of his stakes placed gallopers have Secretariat in their dam lines.

The great mare La Troienne is a strong influence in Warrior’s Reward who carries strains of her descendants Bimelech, Buckpasser, Poker and Jet Action. Many of his best progeny to date carry further strains and she is easily found in Australian mares – such as those with More Than Ready, Woodman, Boucher, Snippets, Rhythm, Hula Chief, Don’t Say Halo, Easy Goer, Cohoes, Air de France, Noble Bijou, Pleasant Tap and Chem.

Gr.3 winning mare Traffic Court is also proving influential for Warrior’s Reward whose dam sire Seeking The Gold’s grandam is by her dual Gr.1 winning son Hasty Road. Two of Warrior’s Reward’s stakes winners and three of his stakes placegetters are line-bred to Traffic Court whose triple Gr.1 winning son Traffic Judge makes his presence felt in Australia – most easily found as the fourth dam sire of Redoute’s Choice (son of Danehill; hence a Flower Bowl cross as well). Mares carrying a strain of Gulch are also of interest.

The aptly named matriarch Special is another great mare to duplicate with her famous grandson Sadler’s Wells being Medaglia d’Oro’s grandsire. Warrior’s Reward has sired two stakes winners and two stakes placegetters out of mares with a strain of Special’s prolific son Nureyev. He is easy to find in this part of the world as are other members of this family such as Northern Meteor, Thatching and Fairy King (sire of Encosta de Lago).

Medaglia d’Oro’s grandam Dubbed In is bred on a close 3 X 4 cross of her own fourth dam Sunday Evening, also grandam of Silent Screen. This family has made its mark in Australia with mares by Bluebird, West Quest and Dolphin Street being of great interest for Warrior’s Reward.

Warrior’s Reward also carries strains of Plucky Liege’s sons Bull Dog and Sir Gallahad III and it is interesting to note that he is doing a good job with mares (four stakes winners, three stakes placed) carrying a strain of her descendant Fappiano. Look also for Bois Roussel and Admiral Drake.

Kentucky Oaks heroine Lalun is another mare whose influence has to be noted with her son Bold Reason being dam sire of Sadler’s Wells. Strains of her prolific son Never Bend are highly desirable; most easily found in mares with Mill Reef, Straight Strike, Lonhro, Green Desert, Last Tycoon, I Am Invincible, Riverman and Street Cry.

El Prado’s grandam Cap And Bells is another to take note of… whilst she is not an easy mare to duplicate Warrior’s Reward has sired a stakes winner and a Gr.3 placegetter line-bred to her. Strains of her son Drone are worth looking for. And if you like the idea of line-breeding to Warrior’s Reward’s successful third dam Quilloquick, send mares by High Yield his way.
