“I saw him take about six steps and that was enough. I knew straight away that I had to buy a Share the Upside. He’s a great-looking stallion.” — Daniel Nevill, Hollylodge Thoroughbreds

“I took advantage of Spendthrift’s ‘Share the Upside’ scheme and sent the mare Street Lover (Street Cry {Ire}) to him. She produced an outstanding colt and to say I was pleased is an understatement. I will send two mares to him this season, as I think he is big chance to get precocious, tough horses that should train on.” — Matt Brown, Ellora Stud

With pedigree credentials to match his imposing physical presence, Spendthrift Australia’s Gold Standard looms as an attractive option for breeders this year.

Gold Standard is by the top-class racehorse and sire Sebring. His dam is the Greig mare Coniston Gem, whose nine wins included the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy and Hyderabad Race Club Stakes.

Racing in the stable of champion trainer Gai Waterhouse, Gold Standard won two of his six starts including a powerful victory in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill. He also placed in the Group 3 Up & Coming Handicap and was a close fourth in Trapeze Artist’s Group 1 Golden Rose, where he finished ahead of the likes of Pariah and Merchant Navy.

But Gold Standard’s most impressive credentials lie in his pedigree, which features crosses of influential sires Mr Prospector, Star Kingdom, Sir Ivor and Turn-To, along with the great mares Marchetta, La Troienne, Almahmoud, Gondolette and Mumtaz Mahal.

Sebring’s pedigree features three crosses of Alahmoud – Halo, Northern Dancer and Danehill.

Sebring has crossed with Danehill blood to produce a remarkable 275 winners, 20 of them at black-type level. They include Group 1 winner Amphitrite and Group 2 winners Pretty in Pink, Ringerdingding and Sedanzer.

With Danehill’s son Redoute’s Choice, Sebring has produced 57 winners including eight at black-type level. That group is headed by Amphitrite in the Thousand Guineas.

Another highly successful cross is with Rory’s Jester. There have been 54 runners for 33 winners, six of them at stakes level. Master Ash and Broadband have both scored at Group 3 level, while Ever Loyal placed in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas.

Sebring has also formed a successful nick with Encosta de Lago. This cross has yielded 47 winners, with five at stakes level, headed by Group 2 winners Aethero, Seaburge, Catch A Fire and Believe Yourself.

Crossed with Nureyev blood, Sebring has produced 76 winners from 132 runners. There have been seven stakes winners, with Egg Tart’s Schweppes Oaks-Queensland Oaks double being the headline act.

Sebring and Anabaa have combined for an exceptional strike rate of 17 winners from 23 runners. There have been three stakes winners, headed by Dissident in the Randwick Guineas, All Aged Stakes, Makybe Diva Stakes, Memsie Stakes and CF Orr Stakes.

Gold Standard does not have Northern Dancer in the dam line, making him a suitable option for branches of Nijinsky II, Danzig (especially Anabaa and Danehill, including Choisir, Redoute’s Choice and Danzero), Nureyev, Lyphard, Last Tycoon and Encosta de Lago.

Gold Standard commenced stud duties in 2018 and his service fee for 2021 will be $5,500 inc. GST
