Spendthrift Farm and trainer Lloyd Kennewell teamed up to purchase a Deep Impact (JPN) colt for $1.7 million during the opening session of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.

Offered on account of Arrowfield Stud, Scone, as agent, the striking bay is by the seven-time champion sire in Japan.

“He’s a lovely colt from an outstanding family and by what is probably the world’s best sire in Deep Impact,” said Arrowfield’s John Messara. “Spendthrift has got an international outlook. Good luck to the buyers.”

The bay juvenile is the second foal from the Redoute’s Choice mare Grito, herself a half-sister to Australian Champion Sprinter Yell, as well as the stakes winner Sung.

“There’s not many (Deep Impacts) to choose from and he’s the best stallion in the world, so we had to give a bit to get him, but we are definitely happy to have him in our stable,” Spendthrift General Manager Garry Cuddy said. “Easter is where you come to buy these big pedigrees and this horse definitely fits that description. It=s a great Woodlands family, it’s a fantastic running female family, so it was well worth it.”
