Sebring nicks set the Gold Standard

August 26, 2021

Spendthrift Australia’s Gold Standard boasts pedigree credentials that match his imposing physical presence and talent on the racetrack. Impressing breeders that have already supported him, Gold Standard has the attributes to be a strong successor to his late, great sire Sebring.

Out of multiple Group 3 winner Coniston Gem and from the stable of renowned trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Gold Standard raced in the highest company during his six-race career, finishing out of the top two on only two occasions. Running a tight second in the G3 Up & Coming Stakes, he went on to win the G2 Stan Fox Stakes, emphatically beating Group 1 winners Trapeze Artist, Ace High, and The Mission. Gold Standard also placed a close fourth in the G1 Golden Rose, finishing ahead of elite gallopers Merchant Navy, Pariah, Formality, The Mission, and Perast.

With a magnificent bloodline, Gold Standard’s sire Sebring, himself by the globetrotting More Than Ready, has etched his place in the breeding history books. In his ten-year stud career before his premature death in 2019, Sebring has sired 692 winners, 137 of these being stakes horses with 37 Group winners, including six at Group 1 level – highlighted by Dissident, Criterion, and Lucky Bubbles.

Encosta De Lago mares have proven a successful mating with Sebring, recording over $7.7 million in earnings and five Group winners. This cross is highlighted by Pinocchio, the dam of Hong Kong sprinter and half-brother to Classique Legend, Aethero.

Zabeel mares have also proven fruitful when crossed with Sebring blood, counting eight runners, all of them winners, with two at stakes level giving an excellent 25% stakes winners to runners rate. This nick can be furthered by the success of Lonhro mares when bred on this cross, producing 6 winners from 8 runners, including one stakes winner and a 75% winners to runners rate.

Statistically one of the best performed crosses with the Sebring blood comes from matings with Anabaa mares, producing 16 winners from 22 runners giving a 72% winners to runners rates, along with 2 stakes winners at a highly successful 13% stakes winners to runners rate.

Perhaps the most lucrative nick to the Sebring sireline is that with Redoute’s Choice. With earnings just shy of $5 million, the cross has produced 30 individual winners from 58 runners, including five at Group level. Progeny includes Group 1 winner Amphitrite and Group winners Wu Gok, Violate, Broadband, and Kiss A Rose.

These results are enhanced with the inclusion of Redoute’s Choice’s phenomenal sire Danehill, whose mares boast a 62.5% winners to runners rate with the Sebring nick. Of the 15 winners, three have been at stakes level – Ulman, Scratchy Bottom, and Notonyourlife.

Another nicking worth mentioning is that with Fastnet Rock mares, producing 21 winners from 27 runners, holding a very impressive 77% winners to runners rate.

Gold Standard.
