Spendthrift Australia’s 2-year-old colt Irukandji won the $150,000, Group 3 The Schweppervescence at 1,400m at Rosehill on March 31 with a determined effort to secure his first stakes victory [WATCH RACE].
Just a few lengths off the lead while well off the fence early on, Irukandji made a swift move to the front 800 metres out, then got a serious challenge from several foes straightening for the final 400. Under stout urging from Corey Brown, Irukandji edge away in deep stretch, holding off Aristocratic Miss for the win.
At the finish Irukandji was a half-length ahead of Aristocratic Miss. The time was 1.24.55 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 35.69.
“He had no favours, he had a bit of a horrid run, but to Corey’s (jockey Corey Brown) credit he got him to jump and relax. He was three deep, they didn’t go hard, and Corey elected to drive forward and try and get to the front,” said co-trainer Michael Hawkes.
“It was a great thrill for all involved to see Irukandji get the job done today,” said Spendthrift Australia general manager Garry Cuddy. “There are not many 2-year-olds that can make two separate runs in a race like he did and still be strong on the line.”
Irukandji is by first-crop sire Dundeel out of the General Nediym mare Cerberus Cal and was a $500,000 yearling purchase by Spendthrift Australia. After his four starts he has now earned the valuable Group 3 black type to go with a Listed second-place at Flemington on March 3rd, taking his earnings to $118,025.
“He is another Spendthrift yearling purchase to win at Group level which is a wonderful achievement considering how many horses we buy each year,” said Cuddy. “We are hopeful that there are bigger things in store for him in the future.”
