Authentic an American standout

January 27, 2021

A stellar season for Authentic (USA) (Into Mischief {USA|) saw him win the G1 Kentucky Derby and G1 Haskell S. but it was his 2.25l victory in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic which was judged to be his standout performance of the year with a rating 126.

This placed him second overall in the World Best Horse rankings held in London on Tuesday night and made him the world’s best 3-year-old and highest-rated dirt horse.

Authentic is now at stud at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, which comprised one part of his large syndicate of owners during his racing days. The group included Myracehorse Stable, with members in every state in America and from more than 20 countries around the world.

“Authentic was just getting better and better and better,” said Baffert via video link from his home in California.

“He had a lot of speed and he could carry a mile and a quarter effortlessly. It takes a really good horse to win the Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Is it’s just an honour to be involved in this. Racing is all about bragging rights so to have a horse as good as this is what it’s all about.”

By reigning champion sire Into Mischief, Authentic became his sire’s most accomplished horse to date, with earnings of $6,191,200 from six wins in eight starts. Along with the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic and Haskell (G1), Authentic scored victories in the San Felipe (G2) and Sham (G3), and was runner-up in the Preakness (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1) in his lone defeats.

Authentic won his debut and only start at two at Del Mar.
