Superb Crosses with Spendthrift’s Swear

July 12, 2020

With his oldest progeny about to turn two and a stack of pedigree credentials behind him, the sky is the limit for young Spendthrift stallion Swear.

His sire is the legendary Redoute’s Choice who has risen to become one of the biggest names in Australian stallion history and whose influence will continue to be felt for decades to come.

His dam, Crossyourheart, was a multiple stakes winner who won six of her 14 starts, four of them as a two-year-old including a dazzling four-length romp in the New Zealand Bloodstock Classique – predecessor to the Karaka Million.

Swear was a $725,000 yearling, and he was an impressive and undefeated two-year-old. As a three-year-old he added the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality, then finished second behind star filly Yankee Rose in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes. Among the eight horses he beat were Prized Icon, the winner of the Victoria Derby two starts later.

Swear boasts an exceptional pedigree, with crosses of Northern Dancer, Nijinsky II, Ribot and Bletchingly, and multiple strains of the prolific Torpenhow, La Troienne, Cinna, Lady Josephine and Marchetta families.

The Australian breeding landscape would look very different without the influence of Swear’s sire Redoute’s Choice, and it is no surprise that he has produced outstanding results when crossed with a number of other sire superstars who made their name in this part of the world.

  • With the Sir Tristram line (including his sons Zabeel, Marauding and Military Plume), Redoute’s Choice and his descendants have produced a whopping 1579 winners including 115 at stakes level. They include no fewer than 18 individual Group 1 winners – Lankan Rupee, Melito, Streama, Luckygray, Samantha Miss, Lotteria, Super Seth, Kementari, The Mitigator, Secret Agenda, Pasadena Girl, Seasons Bloom, Clearly Innocent, Royal Descent, Adventador, Shootoff, Allez Wonder and Empires Choice.
  • Long-serving and prolific shuttle stallion More Than Ready has clicked beautifully with Redoute’s Choice blood. There have been 242 winners, 26 of them black-type, headed by Group 1 winners Miracles Of Life and Amphitrite. More Than Ready descends from the great mare La Troienne, who also appears in Swear’s pedigree. You could also consider other La Troienne descendants such as Woodman, Don’t Say Halo and Rhythm.
  • Redoute’s Choice has crossed with Red Ransom for 266 winners. There have been 23 winners at black-type level over a range of distances, including Group 1 stars Trapeze Artist, Estijaab, Sunlight, Extra Brut and Secret Agenda.
  • The Redoute’s Choice-Last Tycoon nick has proven to be another gold mine with 546 winners from 825 runners (66.2%). The 47 individual stakes winners include Master of Design, Sacred Falls, Shout the Bar, Luna Rossa, Wandjina, Bonaria and Dariana at the elite level.

Adding extra appeal to that Last Tycoon connection is the fact that Last Tycoon’s ancestress Schiaparelli also appears in the pedigree of Crossyourheart’s sire Show A Heart via her grandson Dogger Bank. Last Tycoon’s Australian descendants include the current star sire Written Tycoon, whose dam was bred on a Vain/Better Boy cross. This is the opposite to Swear’s second dam sire Centaine (this Written Tycoon/Centaine combo boasts an 88.9% strike rate).

Written Tycoon also has Noholme II (and his close relation Nearula) whilst Swear has his brother Todman. Look for other strains of that champion, as well as his other brothers Faringdon and Shifnal.

Note that Redoute’s Choice’s granddam Dancing Show can be found in the Victorian broodmare population through her sons Umatilla and Hurricane Sky. Further line-breeding opportunities may lie here.

Swear stands at Spendthrift Australia for a service fee of $5,500.
