Warrior's Club all heart in Commonwealth (G3)

Warrior's Reward

Saturday, April 7, 2018
Warrior's Club became the first North American graded stakes winner for Warrior's Reward on April 7 when the 4-year-old colt battled gamely to take the $250,000US Commonwealth (G3) at Keeneland by a neck.

Warrior's Club has now won or placed in five stakes and has earned $518,504US for his owner syndicate Churchill Downs Racing Club and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The dark bay is also the all-time leading earner for his sire.

Saturday's win against a very tough field didn't come easily. Though he was never far off the lead, Warrior's Club was between horses the entire time, even getting shuffled back to about sixth coming into the stretch, before jockey Luis Contreras found a seam. The race was a wide-open affair with a furlong to run, but Warrior's Club dug in, getting past Awesome Saturday and holding off Limousine Liberal to finish the seven furlongs in a very quick 1:22.61.

“The name describes him about as well as anything – he’s a warrior, I tell you,” said Lukas. “He’s just a wonderful little horse to train. I always kid people that a used car salesman could train him; he’s not hard to train at all. He gives you every effort, every time. And to make 200 people (ownership group Churchill Downs Racing Club) happy is really special.”

The winner was bred in Kentucky by John O'Meara.
